The Airplane

The Airplane

“Big Red “is a Waco YMF-5. The YMF-5 is a classic design built with modern technology. “Big Red” was built in 1993, in Battle Creek Michigan at the Waco Aircraft Factory. She has a Jacobs R755 Radial Engine that has been meticulously maintained by some of the best in the aviation industry. The 275 HP has a unique Harley Davidson sound, when her engine starts its very loud, with a nice cat like per buzz. (I have even heard the Waco nicknamed Harley of the sky). She has a classic wooden propeller. Big Red has the reputation for being the best maintained aircraft in the Louisville area, going above and beyond FAA standards for safety and reliability. On Big Red the pilot sits in the back, and up to two passengers sit in the front. Wherever she goes she gets all the attention with her unique open cockpit design and Golden Era of aviation appearance. Big Red’s adventures began with a lovely couple from Alaska who resided in Saint Croix Virgin Islands. She gave rides during summer months in Alaska. The remainder of the year she gave rides in the Virgin Islands. She was later purchased by an American Airline pilot from Dallas Texas, who flew her as his personal aircraft. Steve Koch one of two founders of “Classic Biplane Tours” purchased “Big Red” in 2004. Since 2004 she has called Bowman Field in Louisville Kentucky her home giving tours to hundreds of people yearly. In 2008 Steve gained sole ownership of Big Red. In 2023 Steve announced his upcoming retirement, and “Big Red” went up for sale. Steve’s son CJ wanted to keep Big Red in the family. In May of 2024 CJ and his wife Misty purchased Big Red. Exciting news! Big Red will start her Barnstorming adventures Spring 2025. Her new home will be in Bardstown Kentucky where she will be doing bourbon tours, and historical tours. She will continue doing several events a year. We are very excited to begin this new journey in Nelson County with all the crew at Samuels Field.
